On Sunday (June 27, 2021), the United States launched air strikes against Iranian backed militants in Iraq and Syria in response to what the Pentagon said were drone attacks on US personnel and facilities in Iraq.

The Syrian Observatory for human rights, based in the United Kingdom, said on Monday that the US military struck relevant military targets in Eastern Syria near the Iraqi border, killing at least five Iranian supported militia militants and injuring many others.

The official Syrian news agency said that a child was killed and at least three people were injured in Sunday's US air raid.

The Pentagon said that the targets of the US military attacks were combat and weapons storage facilities, including two sites in Syria and one site in Iraq.

"As tonight's air strike shows, President Biden has made it clear that he will take action to protect American personnel," the Pentagon said in a statement

This is the second time since President Biden took office in January this year that he authorized the US military to attack the militias supported by Iran in Syria.

In recent months, US personnel and facilities in Iraq have been constantly attacked. The United States has been accusing Iranian supported groups of carrying out these attacks.
